First Aid Guide

Emergency Contact:

If in doubt, do not hesitate and dial 999 immediately.
Seek advice from first aid trained staff if they are available.

Initial Response

When someone is injured, follow these steps:

  1. Check that you and the injured person aren't in any danger
  2. Make the situation safe if possible
  3. Dial 999 for an ambulance when necessary
  4. Carry out basic first aid

Common Emergency Situations

Anaphylaxis

Key Signs: Difficulty breathing, swollen tongue/throat, possible rapid onset

Actions:

  • Call 999 immediately
  • Check for adrenaline auto-injector
  • Help administer medication if available
  • Keep person comfortable and upright if conscious

Heavy Bleeding

Actions:

  • Apply direct pressure to wound
  • Use clean pad or dressing if available
  • Maintain pressure until bleeding stops
  • Call 999 for serious bleeding

Burns and Scalds

Remember:

  • Cool under running water for 20 minutes
  • Remove jewelry/clothing unless stuck to skin
  • Cover with cling film or clean dressing
  • Do not apply creams or lotions

FAST Guide for Stroke

Face: Has their face fallen on one side?

Arms: Can they raise both arms and keep them up?

Speech: Is their speech slurred?

Time: Time to call 999 if you see any of these signs

Heart Attack Signs

Key Symptoms:

  • Chest pain (pressure, tightness or squeezing)
  • Pain spreading to arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach
  • Shortness of breath

Actions:

  • Call 999 immediately
  • Have person sit in comfortable position
  • Give 300mg aspirin to chew if available and suitable

Shock

Signs:

  • Pale, cold, clammy skin
  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Weakness and dizziness

Actions:

  • Call 999
  • Lie person down, raise and support legs
  • Keep person warm
  • Monitor breathing
