First Aid Guide

Emergency Contact:

If in doubt, do not hesitate and dial 999 immediately.
Seek advice from first aid trained staff if they are available.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can occur within seconds or minutes of exposure to an allergen.

Key Steps:
  • Call 999 immediately
  • Check for medication (adrenaline self-injector)
  • Help administer medication if trained
  • Keep person comfortable and sitting upright if conscious

Bleeding Heavily

Immediate Actions:
  • Dial 999 for an ambulance
  • Use disposable gloves if available
  • Check for embedded objects
  • Apply direct pressure to wound
For Severed Body Parts:

Place in plastic bag or wrap in cling film, do not wash, wrap in soft fabric and place in container of crushed ice (not directly touching ice).

Burns and Scalds

Treatment Steps:
  • Cool under running water for at least 20 minutes
  • Remove clothing/jewelry unless stuck to skin
  • Cover with cling film or clean dressing
  • Do not use creams or lotions

Choking

Mild Choking

  • Encourage coughing
  • Ask them to spit out object if visible
  • Do not put fingers in mouth

Severe Choking

Back Blows Technique:
  1. Stand behind and slightly to one side
  2. Support chest with one hand
  3. Lean person forward
  4. Give up to 5 sharp blows between shoulder blades
  5. Check if blockage has cleared

Heart Attack

Symptoms:
  • Central chest pain/pressure
  • Pain spreading to arms, jaw, neck, back
  • Shortness of breath
Actions:
  • Call 999 immediately
  • Sit person down, supported
  • Give 300mg aspirin to chew (if appropriate)
  • Monitor vital signs

Stroke (FAST)

FAST Test:
  • Face - Has their face fallen on one side?
  • Arms - Can they raise both arms?
  • Speech - Is their speech slurred?
  • Time - Time to call 999
