Emergency Response

Important: If in doubt, do not hesitate and dial 999 immediately. Always seek advice from first aid trained staff if they are available.

When encountering a medical emergency, remember these key steps:

Unconscious Person

Key Actions:
  • If breathing: Place in recovery position
  • If not breathing: Call 999 and start CPR immediately

Severe Bleeding

Tip: If blood soaks through the dressing, apply another on top - do not remove the original dressing.

Burns and Scalds

Heart Attack Signs (FAST)

Remember FAST:
  • Face - Has their face fallen on one side?
  • Arms - Can they raise both arms?
  • Speech - Is their speech slurred?
  • Time - Time to call 999

Choking

Mild Choking:

Severe Choking:

Note: Do not give abdominal thrusts to babies under 1 year or pregnant women.

Shock

Signs include:

Treatment:
  • Lay person down with raised legs
  • Keep them warm
  • Call 999
  • Monitor breathing
