Emergency Response

Important: If in doubt, do not hesitate and dial 999 immediately. Always seek advice from first aid trained staff if they are available.

When encountering a medical emergency, remember these key steps:

Check that you and the casualty are not in danger
Make the situation safe if possible
Call 999 if necessary
Carry out basic first aid

Unconscious Person

Key Actions:

If breathing: Place in recovery position
If not breathing: Call 999 and start CPR immediately

Severe Bleeding

Call 999 immediately
Use disposable gloves if available
Apply direct pressure to the wound
Raise and support the injured area
Do not remove objects from wounds

Tip: If blood soaks through the dressing, apply another on top - do not remove the original dressing.

Burns and Scalds

Cool under running water for at least 20 minutes
Remove clothing and jewelry (unless stuck to the skin)
Cover with cling film or clean dressing
Do not:
- Use lotions, creams, or ointments
- Break blisters
- Remove anything stuck to the burn

Heart Attack Signs (FAST)

Remember FAST:

Face - Has their face fallen on one side?
Arms - Can they raise both arms?
Speech - Is their speech slurred?
Time - Time to call 999

Choking

Mild Choking:

Encourage coughing
Monitor carefully

Severe Choking:

Give up to 5 back blows
If unsuccessful, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts
Call 999 if obstruction doesn't clear

Note: Do not give abdominal thrusts to babies under 1 year or pregnant women.

Shock

Signs include:

Pale, cold, clammy skin
Rapid, shallow breathing
Weakness and dizziness

Treatment:

Lay person down with raised legs
Keep them warm
Call 999
Monitor breathing
