First Aid Guide
Emergency Response
Important Note: If in doubt, dial 999 immediately. Always seek advice from first aid trained staff if available.
When encountering an emergency situation:
- Check that you and the injured person are not in danger
- Make the situation safe if possible
- Call 999 if necessary
- Carry out basic first aid
Common Emergencies
Anaphylaxis
Key Actions: Call 999 immediately. Help administer adrenaline auto-injector if available. Keep person comfortable and upright.
Severe Bleeding
- Call 999 immediately
- Use disposable gloves if available
- Apply direct pressure to wound
- Use clean dressing or pad
- Do not remove embedded objects
Burns and Scalds
- Cool under running water for at least 20 minutes
- Remove clothing/jewelry unless stuck to skin
- Cover with cling film or clean dressing
- Do not apply creams or lotions
Heart Attack Response
Signs include: Central chest pain, pain spreading to arms/jaw/neck, shortness of breath
- Call 999 immediately
- Sit person down, supported and comfortable
- Give 300mg aspirin to chew if available and suitable
- Monitor breathing until help arrives
Stroke (FAST Test)
- Face: Has their face fallen on one side?
- Arms: Can they raise both arms?
- Speech: Is speech slurred?
- Time: Call 999 immediately if you notice these signs
Remember: The faster you act, the better their chances of recovery.
Choking
Mild Choking
- Encourage coughing
- Do not put fingers in mouth
Severe Choking
Warning: Person cannot speak, cry, cough or breathe
- Give up to 5 sharp back blows
- If unsuccessful, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts
- Call 999 if blockage doesn't clear
- Continue cycles until help arrives
